ENSEMBLE COFFEE RESEARCH + EDUCATION
FAQ

You have questions. We have answers. For anything else, please get in touch

GENERAL

Glad you asked! Education is key to making our industry better, but we can’t reach everyone—so we support those who can. World Coffee Research is a not-for-profit organisation helping to make our industry better. WCR’s research and development results in coffee farmers, their businesses, families and land being taken care of.

ECRE participates in WCR’s Check-off program, which means we donate 1c for every kilogram of coffee roasted in our facility. This may not sound like much, but when you consider over 15 tonnes are roasted every month, it’s a minimum annual contribution of $1,000 AUD. Some of our roasters also choose to make additional contributions. Collectively, we have the power to make a big impact on the livelihoods of the families who produce what we love to drink.

When we claim something is compostable, it means the waste can be disposed of in a commercial composting facility, if not your compost at home. This means less waste in our oceans (or landfill) and you’re being a good ancestor to future generations. Pat yourself on the back, mate.

When we use the term ‘sustainable’, it means we’ve aspired to (but cannot guarantee) to stock products that don’t negatively impact a person’s livelihood, society or the planet. It’s a lofty ambition and we’re doing our best to meet it.

We're blushing. If you want to learn more about us and are a member of the press, please email us.

Of course you can! We love to help people so if you can’t find what you need on the website, please contact us.

Our purpose is to provide easier access to education, equipment and support—to ultimately help our community make coffee better. Known for co-roasting since 2016, we’ve evolved to deliver tools that help our industry become more environmentally, socially and monetarily sustainable. From picker to roaster to barista to consumer, we believe anyone who loves coffee can help make things better. It’s a community effort.

CO-ROASTING

We’re flexible. Some scenarios (eg. roast your own) are better suited to direct debit, where others are invoiced. Let us know what works for you and we can accommodate.

You sure do! With our online scheduling program you can book slots you need, and change or cancel them (minimum 48 hours notice).

At any given time, there are never more than three roasters roasting. Most of the time there are less. And we’ve got enough packaging and cupping equipment so you’re never waiting in line.

No, you don’t. If you’re interested in using our facilities but don’t have someone to roast for you, we can do it. We have two options: we roast with you or ghost roasting.

No problem! We offer education and one-on-one training to get you up and roasting independently in no time. For more information, please email us.

All you need are green beans to roast. There are no membership fees, just easy-to-understand volume-per-hour pricing. ECRE provides everything else. Need green beans? We can provide those to members too, at fantastic rates. If you want to know more about your co-roasting options (and what’s included) click on the Co-Roasting link in the top navigation menu.

Amazing gear, even if we do say so ourselves. We have invested in world-class equipment (so you don't have to) and a full list can be found here.

Let’s start with what roasting is. Through chemical changes, roasting transforms green coffee (a hard and inedible seed) into a product that can be ground, brewed and consumed. Roasting requires equipment, space and roasters, which are a costly barrier to entry for specialty coffee brands who want to begin roasting for themselves.

This is where co-roasting comes in.

Co-roasting is a similar concept to co-working. ECRE provides the equipment and space and you bring the roaster (you!) Just like co-working, you share with others. This model of roasting allows you to focus on roasting with a low upfront investment, in addition to worrying about maintaining and securing said space and equipment. To read more about the pros and cons of co-roasting click on the Co-Roasting link in the top navigation menu.

ACADEMY

Yes. We have a blog where we write about coffee and our industry. There are also free events and a YouTube channel in the works, so keep your eyes peeled.

ECRE uses Zoom, which can be downloaded here. Check your event confirmation email for details, as well as a link to the Zoom meeting.

All our classes are based in Sydney, Australia, so they’re specified in AEST.

If you can’t make it, let us know. Eventbrite’s fee is non-refundable, but our fee is refundable up to 14 working days before the event date.

You sure do! Upon completing one of our workshops or immersive courses, you’ll receive a certificate of completion.

Yes. Prior knowledge of coffee is not required for most of our classes. In the event a class requires advanced knowledge, we’ll say so. Alternatively, send us an email to find out if it’s for you.

All ECRE classes (and events) are sold through Eventbrite, which accepts PayPal and credit card payments.

Our classes are limited in size, so those who book and pay first get the spot. We usually have multiple dates for classes, so if one fills up, you should be able to book the next available one.

Yes, we’re still holding classes! For peace of mind, we always work within governmental guidelines and if NSW COVID-19 restrictions change, we change with them.

ONLINE ORDERS

Good question! All orders placed on business days are processed, roasted and dispatched within 3 working days. We always roast to order, to ensure the best quality and a fresh product.

Yes, but time is of the essence. If you want to cancel an order you’ve just placed, please get in touch with us immediately so we don't send it out. Sadly, if we have already sent it out, we will be unable to cancel it, as we don't offer change of mind refunds or exchanges.

For coffee: if the bag of coffee is an error on our part, we’ll replace it free of charge. You also get to keep the original order. OH&S won’t allow us to accept returns on beans/grounds and we don’t want to bin them. Give them to someone who needs them, eh?

If it’s an error on your part, you’ll need to purchase new coffee beans through the website again.

For anything that’s not coffee: please contact us and we’ll organise to pick up the wrong item and replace it with the correct one.

Once we receive the item from you, it will take 3-5 working days to inspect the item and issue a refund. We’ll send you an email when the refund has been processed. Normally it takes banks 5 business days to apply the refund from when we process it.

No, you don't. If the item is defective, please send it to us for an exchange or refund and we’ll work with the manufacturer to resolve it. We’ll reimburse shipping if the item is deemed defective. Just get in touch with us and we'll organise to get the item sent back and then provide you a new item or refund, your choice. If you need to find our address or how to send it back, check out our "How do I return an item?" question below.

Our refund policy covers failure to meet a consumer guarantee (aka it doesn't work out of the box). We don't offer change of mind refunds or exchanges.

For an item that isn’t working as intended, we will exchange or refund it, no problem. Just get in touch with us and we'll organise to get the item sent back and then provide you a new item or a refund.

Oh dear, that is the worst. If you didn’t already know, consumer law stipulates a replacement or refund on items that don't meet the consumer guarantee (eg. doesn't work out of the box). In line with this, we can offer you a refund or exchange. Please contact us to organise either option and we'll get it sorted swiftly.

To complete a return, please follow these steps:

1- Place the item that requires a refund or exchange in a parcel bag or box;

2- Include a printout of the proof of purchase;

3- Ensure your return address is on the parcel bag/box;

4- Write this delivery address on the parcel bag/box: ECRE Unit 42, 112 McEvoy Street Alexandria NSW 2015 Australia

5- Send it.

Our return policy covers failure to meet a consumer guarantee (aka it doesn't work). We don't offer change of mind refunds.

For an item that isn’t working as intended, we will exchange or refund it, no problem. Just get in touch with us and we'll organise to get the item sent back and then provide you a new item or refund.

Domestic orders usually arrive within 3-5 working days.

PO box destinations are sent via Australia Post and are subject to the respective provider’s timings and availability.

On orders of $50 or more, shipping is free within Australia. On items under $50 it's a flat rate of $10.

Everywhere! Seriously though, we do. We ship domestically within Australia and can post almost anywhere internationally.

In Australia we use Standard Parcel via Sendle, to a home or office address. PO Box orders must be sent via Australia Post, which could mean additional shipping fees. You can find more information on Sendle here.
